Harvest - Batching for Food Production

Purpose

The Harvest Food’s Batching & Instructions enhancement introduces new batching functionality within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central’s Manufacturing module. The goal of this module is to align production planning and order execution with BOM Units of Measure (UoM) and to provide improved visibility and control over batch-based production.

This version focuses on:

• Creating production order lines in BOM UoM
• Enabling planning by batch quantities
• Printing job cards by batch
• Enhancing instructions from BOMs to production orders

Accessing Harvest’s Batching & Instructions

You can access this functionality from multiple points within Business Central’s manufacturing environment, including:

• Planning Worksheet
• Simulated, Planned, Firm Planned, or Released Production Orders

All standard Business Central workflows are supported, with additional logic applied automatically to handle batch-based calculations and BOM UoM conversions.

To enable the Harvest Batching feature, open Manufacturing Setup and enable the following settings.

• Use BOM UoM
• Plan by Batch

Report Selection Production Order should be updated to Report ID 72897983

Using Harvest’s Batching & Instructions

1. Creating Production Order Lines in BOM UoM

In the standard system, production orders always use the base UoM of the item, regardless of the BOM setup. This enhancement corrects that behavior.

New Functionality:
• When a production order is created or refreshed, the program references the BOM header to determine the Unit of Measure (including any active BOM versions).
• The Quantity from the Production Order Header is inserted into the lines, and Business Central’s native calculation logic is then applied to determine expected component quantities.
• This functionality applies consistently whether the order is created manually or through planning.

2. Planning by BOM UoM (Batch UoM)

This feature modifies the standard planning logic to allow planning and order suggestions by batch size defined in the BOM or Item setup.

New Planning Logic:
• The system references the BOM header UoM instead of the item’s base UoM.
• Planning suggestions are divided according to the batch quantity or relevant modifiers such as Maximum Order Quantity or Order Multiple.
• The system respects all existing planning parameters and order modifiers.

Result

Base UoM = LBS, Batch = 250

750 LB

3 batches

Max Order Qty = 250

750 LB

3 orders of 250 LB each

Order Multiple = 125

856 LB

3.5 batches (round up for partial batch)

3. Enhance Instructions from BOM to Production Order (Comments)

This enhancement improves traceability by flowing instructions (comments) from the BOM Header and Lines into the Production Order Header and Lines at creation.

4. Print Job Card by Batch

This enhancement allows the printing of Job Cards per Batch, offering clearer documentation for batch-managed production. Additionally, the Harvest Job Card includes BOM Header and Component Comments on the report.

Report Enhancements:
• Include Header Comments and Line Comments in the report.
• Add an option on the request page: “Print by Batch” (default = TRUE)

Behavior:
• If Print by Batch = FALSE, one job card prints per full production order.
• If Print by Batch = TRUE, the system prints one job card per batch:
- Example: 3 batches = 3 job cards; 3.5 batches = 4 job cards (last one partial).
- Each job card reflects the correct batch quantity and displays:
- Batch Count
- Total Quantity (from Prod. Order Header)
